8 Ways to Get the Most out of Church 101
1. See Church 101 as an experiment.
The best way to approach this course is to consider the next five weeks as an exciting, joy-filled experiment. An adventure in walking with God and others in some very important (and for some, perhaps new) heart-and-listening-centered ways.
2. Understand that you will be engaging practices, not just learning information.
This course is so much more than taking in new information. It is designed to be a synergistic combination of several different learning activities — all done in relationship with the Lord and at least one other person.
You will learn two simple but powerful “rhythms of attention” and one prayer which is the key to spreading joy. We have seen God use these practices to not only deepen intimacy between God and His people but also improve relationships and create and nurture communities of Christ.
To understand more about “rhythms of attention’, watch this video by Dr. Kent Smith on “Attention – Our Most Precious Asset”.
3. Ask God for a partner.
One of the key parts of Church 101 is having a “CO2 Partner” or “Church-of-Two-Partner.” This is a person who you will meet with as close to daily as possible to practice what you are learning. Your CO2 partner should be someone you want to grow a strong, enduring relationship with like a spouse, a family member or a close friend. You can meet in person, online, or even by video chat! Lesson One will detail more about what a “CO2” is and how it works. For now, ask God to show you who to invite to be your partner.
4. Give yourself to the full learning process.
Do the best you can to engage holistically with the weekly learning material. Each lesson finds you reading short articles and watching brief videos. The learning process around this material involves three levels:
- Listening and discussing the content of that lesson with the “Coach.”
- Listening and discussing the content with your CO2 partner and your C101 group if you have one.
- Teaching what you are learning to someone else (Studies have shown that the way we retain information best is by teaching it to someone else).

8. Read Joy Fueled: Catalyzing a Revolution of Joyful Communities
Vibrancy and joy are promised to Christians, yet many people experience the opposite: a guilt-ridden, duty-based, fear-driven, judgemental culture that has left them disconnected and disillusioned. Joy Fueled is a revolutionary, yet practical book that seeks to ignite a movement of vibrant communities of Jesus by delivering three simple practices that inspire hope, build resilience, foster mature relationships and catalyze a self-propagating revolution of joy.
